when I started taekwondo, I never thought I would come this far, by IZ

When I first started taekwondo at the age of eight, I never thought I would ever come this far. What first started out as a way to defend myself became a huge part of my life. Now, six years later, I could not imagine a life without it.
Less than a year ago, I earned my black belt, but getting it was a struggle. I had to step out of my comfort zone and learn three new forms, which are choreographed sequences of kicks, punches, and steps that I was expected to memorize. The biggest struggle for me was that forms are practiced and poised, in contrast to sparring, which is more combative and disorderly. However, with persistence and many lessons with my amazing coaches, I progressed through and perfected each of the three forms. Though I lacked confidence in the accuracy of my forms, I tested and ultimately passed. By the end, I left my dojo with confidence and an amazing new skill. Looking back on it now, I was more than adequately prepared, and I should have just trusted myself from the start.
Taekwondo has taken up a large space in my life, teaching me confidence, persistence, and determination, and I am so extremely glad I didn’t quit when things got difficult, or it didn’t feel like I was improving as much as I wanted to. Everyday when I go to practice, I am reminded that there will be rough patches to get through, but persisting through it is worth it. Through persisting through my struggles, I gained an everlasting hobby and passion.
