Having a group of friends is the biggest blessing I could have ever asked for.

The definition of friends is someone who has mutual affection. To me it truly means more than that. Yes, of course a true friendship is love each other, but  it also means being loyal to one another.

In my opinion, loyalty is the most important thing in a friendship. I know my friends would stick up for me in any circumstance. Not only will they make me feel amazing about myself, they give me a shoulder to cry on when I’m sad.

The best part of having a group of friends is once you become close to one, you become close to all. When I was really little Beall was my best friend and as we grew together, we not only became closer with each other, we also grew to know other people too. As a friend group we also grew with each other. We all had differences but when we were together we were never not happy.

There are so many things I love to do with my friends but eating and sitting around at a table with no phones is our favorite thing to do. We also love going on car drives when we listen to music that we know all the words too.

But I truly believe that if we were locked in a room with nothing but each other, we would be entertained.

Friendships like the ones I have don’t come over night, there are ways to build them.

Putting yourself out there is the main goal to set to find the people who will stick by side.

Loving your friends, being honest, and having patience might not be easy at times but it is definitely worth it.

I thank my friends each and everyday for all the fun they being to my life. If you have friends like mine, or will in the future, always remember to never take them for granted.

Today is National Best Friends Day. My best friends mean the world to me so I’m going to tell y’all about them. I’m one of those people who thinks you can have multiple best friends, because to me a best friend is someone who brings out the best part of yourself. I have best friends that keep me on my toes, and best friends that keep me grounded when my life feels upside down. All of my friends are very different and unique, but one thing that they all have in common is that I trust them and they make me laugh. All of my best friends can make me laugh no matter how upset I am. That’s crucial for being a best friend. So to my best friends, I love you.

Friends are some of the most important people in your life. They are loving, caring, and will always be there for you! I am so thankful to have such great friends, and I love making new ones too!

Ever since I was little, my family has moved around and I had to switch schools several times. I always made friends quickly, but sometimes it was harder than others. As I got older, it was a bit more difficult because girls my age already had their own friend groups.

I had to switch schools again in 7th grade, and I was worried that it would be harder to make new friends. I was so nervous to start school that year. What if they didn’t like me? What if they thought I was weird?

One of my biggest problems in the beginning of the year was figuring out who to sit with at lunch. Since I didn’t know anybody there, it was super awkward and I was so embarrassed.

I started talking to people in my classes and making conversation, and soon enough I had lots of new friends and I finally found a friend group. I became closer to them by sitting with them at lunch and talking every day. We all became super close and had so much fun the rest of the school year!

 

 

At the beginning of that year, I was kind of shy around new people and also a little bit socially awkward. I didn’t really know how to make conversation and be talkative around people I didn’t know. I just wasn’t very confident, I guess.

Now, I love making new friends and hanging out with new people. I think that first year of middle school really taught me how to put myself out there and gain some confidence, and I am so thankful for that! Don’t be afraid to make some new friends!

Book Favorites

I have been a reader for as long as I can remember.

I’ve always loved reading, and one of my favorite memories from when I was little is the first time I spelled out “caterpillar” while reading one night with my dad.

This summer I have had time to read. I especially love to read while tanning because I find it too frustrating to try and see my phone in the sun.

Since I have read so much this summer I figured I might as well tell ya’ll about my three favorite books from this summer. You are going to have to read them!

Fair warning: they’re basically all romance.

The first book is Heartbones by Colleen Hoover.

Heartbones is about a girl who grew up with her drug-addicted mother in a trailerpark. Her father was out of the picture, but when her mom passes away, she has to go spend the summer with him and his new family. She sees all of the differences in their livestyles and despises them for it.

Then, she meets a mysterious boy with whom she shares an “intense connection” with. Colleen Hoover’s words, not mine.

Anyway, turns out this boy is her father’s neighbor and happens to be one of her step-sister’s best friends. So, they spend a bunch of time together and decide to have a meaningless summer fling.

But there are some insane plot twists that I just didn’t expect. It’s really good and I highly recommend.

The second book is The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood.

This book is about a PhD student that ends up fake dating her professor to prove to her best friend that she has moved on from a boy that the friend likes. Obviously, the professor and the student find themselves seriously attracted to each other and the fake dating trope presents itself.

This book is definitely five-stars with incredible writing and a great plot.

The third book is obviously going to be from my favorite series, From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

I already wrote about this series (click here to read) but they are by far the best books that I have ever read and I’m completely obsessed with Armentrout’s writing. It is a fantasy book so the plot is pretty hard to describe, so I’m just going to use the back of the book…

my step sisters are not like cinderella’s step sisters, by KL

Growing up, I always wanted a sister. I had two older brothers, and I wanted to have someone who would play with dolls with me and dress up with me when my mom couldn’t.

When I realized that my mom and my (future) step father, Chris, were going to get married, I was so excited! 

Not only did he have one daughter, but he had two!  Which meant I was getting two step-sisters, and I was so happy! I immediately thought of them as my best friends. I thanked the Lord because not only did he bring me a sister, he brought me two sisters who I would have for life!

Even though we all grew up with movies like Cinderella, where step sisters are evil and mean, having real step sisters is totally different.

One of my step sisters, Kendal, is in ninth grade and really interested in music, reading and science. My other step sister, Audrey, is in sixth grade and is awesome at playing soccer. I fall right in between them being in 7th grade, and so there is always something fun to do with either one of them or all three of us together. 

I used to beg them to sleep over after every dinner we had, and I would always cry when they left. When we went on vacations, we would share a room and do fun things like make Tik Toks and dance to our loud music. We shared clothes, planned how our new room would look when we moved into the same house, and stayed up late talking about everything we could think of.

As we grew older over the past 4 years that our parents have been married, we have matured together and grown even closer. Nowadays, we spend our time talking about what is going on at our different schools and friends, baking new recipes we find on Tik Tok and comparing the latest flavors of Crumbl cookies.

We even made up sister names when we were younger that we laugh about today – Kendilla, Audrina and Katerina. 🙂 I feel as if they have been my sisters for my whole life.

Don’t get me wrong – like all siblings, we have fought and disagreed on things, but in the end it has only brought us closer together.

I know that as we continue to get older and move into high school, college and become adults that I will always have two sisters who have my back and who I can laugh and talk with. I thank God every day for my two AMAZING step sisters. 🙂

Holiday for Hope

I was 9 and my sister was 12 when we were both abused by our next-door neighbor who we thought was our friend  He threatened me not to tell and I was scared so I kept the secret for a long time, but I finally told my mom and I was taken to DCAC (Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center) to tell my story. Even though I was ashamed, I felt immediate relief when my secret was out. The people at DCAC believed me and were so kind to me and my family. I met with many people that day, all smiling.

When I got home I no longer felt safe playing outside or sleeping in my bedroom—it was too close to him. I was anxious, scared, couldn’t sleep. My sister and I who used to be best friends were fighting constantly. My family moved to a new home and I was too scared to make new friends or trust anyone because of what happened. I began therapy to help with my panic attacks and my therapist taught me many methods to cope, reduce my anxiety and heal through my trauma. I graduated from therapy two years ago and have never been happier. DCAC gave me my safety and my life back.

how my semester abroad changed me, by EB

We know some of you are thinking about studying abroad this summer or next fall or even sometime in the next couple of years. This article was originally posted in 2021 by 17-year-old, EB but it still very relevant and hopefully you find it helpful. Thank you, EB!

 

Erika here again! Something you may not know about me is that I studied abroad in Switzerland for the first semester of my sophomore year. In this post, I am going to share a little about my experience: new passions I discovered and things I learned about myself. 

I made the decision to study abroad at the beginning of my freshman year. Though a lot of things changed once I entered high school, I knew that I wanted a bigger change in my life–– something completely brand new. Two of my neighbors growing up had also studied abroad in high school, and their positive experiences inspired me to take the jump. 

So flash forward to September of 2019. I was so excited to leave, so much so that I think my excitement overthrew any nervousness I was having. But my excitement faded the first few days and turned to homesickness very quickly. 

I was confused because I didn’t normally get homesick whenever I left my family; I had gone to camp for a month before and never felt a longing for being back home. 

Looking back, I don’t think I ever realized just how big of an adjustment I was going through. I went from rooming with just myself to rooming with two other girls; I was living in a new place; I was adjusting to a new time zone and schedule; I was participating in demanding physical activities each day; I was meeting completely new people and teachers. It was a lot, and I didn’t really realize how much it was going to be beforehand.  

The remedy to my homesickness ended up being one of the simplest: time. It took me time to adjust to everything, and once I did, I began to fully take advantage of and appreciate every aspect of my experience. 

I found a love for hiking that led me to try out backpacking a few years later (read about my experience here). I learned how to ski, which in result got my whole family back into skiing when I returned. I loved my Art History class that I took so much that I signed up to take AP Art History this year in school. 

But the best part of my experience were the friends I made. I had gone to the same school my whole life, so I did not have too much experience in going somewhere new and having to make completely new friends. Again, it took time to get to know everyone, but there was something in our shared experience that bonded everyone together and eased some of the awkwardness of making new friends. 

I know it sounds cliche, but my semester abroad changed me, and I am forever appreciative for the experience and those who made it possible. It introduced me to some of things I love the most now; it helped me discover things about myself as a person and as a student. 

Most importantly, I learned that it takes time to accommodate to new things. Because with patience, you are truly able to get the most out of an experience.

how to write the sweetest love letter

One more week until Valentine’s Day. This is a repost from 2020 and since so many of you are new to our community, we thought we would post it again…

This is the perfect week to tell the people you love how much they mean to you.

One unique way to express your adoration is through a love letter, so we want to give you a few tips that we have found in writing the perfect love letter.

A love letter does not have to be long or “gushy” but it does need to be personal and sincere. Be specific in the reason you like, love or adore your recipient. 

Dear Bestie,

You mean the world to me because you always know when to make me laugh.

Or…

Dear Dad,

I love you because you patiently help me solve my math homework.

Or…

Dear Sam,

You are the best brother because you saved that last piece of pizza for me.

Adding a fond memory to your letter is a good way to create a connection or expand on the reason for your adoration.

Another tip is to always put a positive spin on your statements. For example, “I think you are amazing because you are are so nice to your friends” sounds much better than if you said, “I think you are amazing because you are not mean to your friends”.

There are several ways to write love letter. You can buy a card that expresses your feelings or write your own sentiments on a piece of nice stationary. (We love these from Joy Creative Shop). You can also get creative by making your own card with colored paper, markers and stickers. Or print a picture of you and your person together then write a note on the back of the photo. If email is best way to get your message across, type away, but receiving a hand-written note feels more special. Think about it – what type of letter do you like?

Another option for a playful love letter is not a letter at all. Instead, write several reasons you love someone on individual sheets of paper or sticky notes. Every day, put a new message on your loved one’s mirror, door or locker. After a week, there will be a list of reasons that your person is so great. And the slow-reveal is a fun way to let them know how often you think of them.

Let’s spread the love!
